ABSTRACT

This chapter describes my return to Australia to a lecturing position at Monash University, my engagement with trade unions and employers in industrial relations, undertaking research and consulting on a variety of issues including industrial democracy, the reform of education and training and improving the quality of working life. My first sabbatical leave in France and the United States enabled me to meet leading international scholars who influenced the course of my future career. I became involved in public policy issues during the Whitlam and Fraser eras of government.
