ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with changes which occurred in industrial relations during the 1990s, as enterprise bargaining replaced the long-established centralised system of wage determination. At the University of Sydney, we gained funding to establish a national centre for industrial relations research which investigated the impact of the changes on the system on workplace relations. There was also growing interest in the impact of globalisation on industrial relations. I returned to my interest in Nordic approaches to industrial relations as a visiting researcher at the Swedish Centre for Worklife Research. I also spent a year as a visiting fellow at the International Institute for Labour Studies at the ILO in Geneva.
