ABSTRACT

It has been said that reading is a one-way communication from the author to the reader. This is, of course, manifestly untrue, for despite the fact that it is the author who has some concept which he wishes to transmit to others, it is just as true that in the reading experience the reader must contribute something to the situation as well, and in so doing establishes a kind of dialogue which develops eventually into a relationship adding considerable meaning to the entire process between reader and author.
