ABSTRACT

A librarian is supposed by the general public to like books. A librarian is thought by most to be a sort of reading machine, into whose receptive heart all books may go, to find a warm reception and a careful response. If the truth must be known, however, there is at least one librarian who has a healthy and well developed set of negative reactions toward some books. In the course of more than forty years of reading I have compiled a list of books which are anathema to me, for one reason or another, and because these books bring the worst out in me, I think the time may have come to express my feelings on the subject, and exorcise my soul of their effect.
