ABSTRACT

I have always found that on long and tedious journeys my best companions have been books. I cannot say how many long and boring hours have been brightened by the company of the books I have carried with me. When I have gone on vacation journeys, I have made it a habit to pack, along with other necessary things, at least two or three books, among them an old favorite for quiet rereading at the end of a day of driving; another, a new book which has caught my attention; and usually one which might be classified as serious reading. Each will find its own and proper time for perusal, and each carries its own purpose for entertainment, relaxation, exploration and release. The old favorite makes for a pleasant hour or so of reunion with old friends; the newly published title offers the pleasing opportunity to meet new friends, to explore new places; the serious reading provides the material to sharpen one’s mind when it has perhaps become dulled by the clicking of railway wheels or the hum and roar of the airplane’s jets.
