When Is a Book Not a Book?

When is a book not a book? It must be said right at the start that the word “book” has different meanings for different individuals. Is a vellum scroll on rollers really a book? Is a bundle of inscribed palm leaves a book? Were the great stone slabs upon which the early Chinese incised characters books? Were the children’s hornbooks of yesterday books? Such questions are not easily answered.
