ABSTRACT

As an extension of this developmental process a “good enough manager” or GEM lets go of overly certain perfectionist behavior, manages with emotional intelligence, and responds and adapts to the emerging behavior of employees, and the larger organization and environment, in order to facilitate better work. This chapter explores the prevailing themes to set the context for GEMs, two decades into the 21st century. It is still up to executives, managers, and other human decision-makers, who bring their admittedly flawed judgments, to make effective decisions within a particular organizational, moral, and socio-political context. The new forms of organizations are being populated by new generations of workers, who bring perspectives and values that are different from those of their predecessors. Millennial managers are much more likely than their elders to employ freelance workers, and that trend is expected to continue.
