ABSTRACT

Not only do the arts inform our understanding of concepts and subject matter, but the reverse is also true! In Chapter 9 we look at how subject matter informs art making and aesthetics. For example, the famous poet Pablo Neruda closely examines nature to write about it. The results are wonderous, aesthetic, and informed by science. This chapter also describes how works of art in and of themselves are openings to teach us about another disciplines of art. For example, artists have depicted musicians and dancers at work, and theater has often tackled the work of artists. Children’s book authors have written wonderful books about artists of all kinds, and illustrators are keen visual literacy experts. This chapter rounds out by focusing on visual literacy in the context of understanding the world around us and its importance to learning.
