ABSTRACT

Suicidal behavior, including thinking of suicide, planning suicide, and making attempts to commit suicide, are common, especially among adolescents and young adults. Although males are more likely to die by suicide, females are more likely to consider killing themselves.

LGBTQ+ adolescents are nearly four times more likely than are heterosexual youth to attempt suicide or be injured in a suicide attempt. Warning signs of suicide include: talking or writing about death, dying, or suicide; making plans to kill oneself; and taking action to obtain the means to kill oneself. Social support is a powerful buffer against suicide and the mental health problems that often precede thoughts of killing oneself. Teachers can play an essential role in preventing suicide.
