ABSTRACT

As they work to support the mental health of their students, teachers must also be mindful to care for themselves. In this chapter, multiple strategies for sustaining oneself are discussed. These include: 1) building community by becoming active in professional organizations; 2) reading, writing, and telling stories to understand and advocate for your work; 3) developing a good match between you and your position; 4) creating a microsystem that you want to be in every day; 5) committing to a habit of self-compassion; 6) finding meaning in your work; 7) seeing students as your partners; and 8) reflecting your work back to yourself, your students, and your community.
