ABSTRACT

Kristallnacht revisited: The Nazi party staged the Kristallnacht pogrom of 9 and 10 November 1938 as popular protest against the murder of a Nazi diplomat. In reality, the event was planned months ahead. It served the Nazi leaders to broadcast four major messages to various audiences. First, the Nazi state’s Jewish policy will change: The Jews will no longer be encouraged to emigrate. Instead, they will be robbed of their wealth and then disposed of. Second, the Nazis announced that they were powerful enough to take on the world powers and pursue their expansionary ambitions. Third, the Nazis announced that they had completed the takeover of the German state. Fourth, the Nazis signaled to the German “Aryans” that they would soon be treated like the Jews.
