ABSTRACT

Why states use violence excessively: All states maintain armed forces in order to bolster and enhance their independence. So do many large organizations, while others prefer to bask in the shade of states and their armed forces. The problem with all armed forces is that they are employed only intermittently and are therefore available for extra-curricular activities, either on their own behalf or on behalf of the state. Like other organizations, armed forces seek to grow and expand by all means and are not necessarily faithful to their masters. Nazi Germany is just an extreme case. No state is safe from military violence and takeovers.
