ABSTRACT

This chapter presents play-and-sing duets to emphasize the characteristic melodic independence of each voice in two-voice counterpoint. It provides duet singing exercises requiring to confirm the key of each exercise and analyze the intervals between the voices. Among the objectives in counterpoint is to create cohesion between the musical lines. One way to accomplish this is through imitation—the restatement of melodic material from one voice in another. This is a particularly useful device in two-voice counterpoint. A specific type of imitative counterpoint is known as “canon,” in which the imitative voice (the 2nd voice) is composed of the same music as the first voice.
