ABSTRACT

Feeling that non-serial atonality lacked the organizing power to sustain larger musical works, Schoenberg developed the aggregate chromatic pitch-class system known as twelve-tone or serial composition. Ordering is the essence of a twelve-tone row’s identity. This chapter presents the basic tenets of the twelve-tone method. It also includes assignment dictations, such as row dictation, melodic dictation, and two-part dictation.
