ABSTRACT

Playing back clips from a media server can be accomplished in a variety of ways and will vary slightly between manufacturers. This chapter looks at the methods for using DMX to control a media server. The method for assigning DMX addresses will be determined by the server (or quite possibly a mode on the server), and this varies greatly between server types. Regardless of how the address is set, once the starting channel has been determined and assigned to the server, the order of the DMX channels in the server’s DMX mapping will determine which channel on the lighting console accesses which parameter. If using an automated digital lighting fixture such as a Magic Panel (Ayrton), additional fixture personalities that include pan, tilt, shutter, and projector menu controls may be required. The manufacturer of the server maps specific attribute functions to specific DMX channels, and then that channel map is supplied to the software engineers of all lighting consoles.
