ABSTRACT

The third chapter on American visitors contributes substantially to the festival story by providing explanations regarding the biggest enigma surrounding the event: how the Quartet of Charles Lloyd came to be in Tallinn. Based on the close reading of the documents from the archival collection of George Avakian located in the New York Public Library, it will unravel the more than one-year long trajectory of Avakian’s effort to get Lloyd to Tallinn. The rest of the chapter presents memories of Ron McClure, Charles Lloyd and introduces the most eagerly anticipated star of the festival Willis Conover.
