ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at how social activism has changed across the more than 40 years that women’s tennis has been a professional sport. The literature on social movements is extensive, especially in regards to organization and leadership. The German social theorist, Karl Mannheim, put in motion an analysis of social generations in his 1927 paper, “The Problem of Generations”. Intersectionality is a particular knowledge project that facilitates our understanding of the lived experiences of those who are affected by race, class, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, nationality, and other identities, and how social inequalities are organized, operate and can be challenged in the social world. Theories of intersectionality also investigate how various identity markers interconnect to shape identities, social institutions, representations, social issues, and social policies. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
