ABSTRACT

The Joiners cohort can be viewed as continuing the work towards equality through equal prize money that the Founders cohort began, for the introduction of the representation of women generally, and distinct socially marginalized groups as well. Sociologist Nancy Whittier explains that, for the Joiners cohort, “their primary role was to expand existing organizations” (Whittier, 2005, p. 63), like the WTA and International Tennis Federation (ITF). Thus, the Joiners cohort keeps in place and extends the issues of the Founders, while also adding issues important to their own generations into the matrix of activism issues.
