ABSTRACT
Conservation of ecosystems and species has become necessary because of the phenomenal increase in the pressures exerted by the human population in its day to day quest for survival. Additionally, the technical capabilities of Homo sapiens are such that it is now possible to undertake feats of biospheric ‘engineering’ of such magnitude and with such rapidity that the time scales operating within the natural world are totally overwhelmed.
