ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 comprises an organised and detailed account of the production of (the versions of) the translation (Monkey) in practical historical, social, publishing, and translation circumstances. The major contributors, important events, and many versions of Monkey as the end products of the translation project are introduced, categorised, and then described and discussed. The production of Monkey as a literary translation project is re-constructed mainly based on the correspondence preserved in the publishing record - University of Reading, Special Collections, Records of George Allen and Unwin Ltd. The project is divided into eight phases for clarity. These relate to the translating, initiating, designing, proofreading, printing, binding, and marketing of the original UK edition produced by George Allen and Unwin Ltd, and the expansion phase of the different versions and reprints of Monkey published by many other publishing companies worldwide, for example, the John Day Company in America. Overlaps constantly occur between the phases, and co-operations and success always are accompanied with difficulties, unexpected events, and conflicts.
