ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on discussing the issues of school-sponsored, academic writing to better understand the nature of academic writing practices, development, and contexts. It begins by defining key terms, such as academic language, literacy, and writing, and then synthesizes major findings from adolescent multilingual writing research conducted in English-medium institutional contexts. Major topics discussed in this chapter include (a) types of writing activities in the classroom, (b) content area writing, (c) writing processes, strategies, and products, (d) factors influencing academic writing development, and (e) identity and technology.
