ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the wild proliferation of data in immersive cartography, and begins to develop the intensive focus on Whitehead’s speculative philosophy that animates the remaining chapters of the book. The explicit turn to Whitehead in this chapter opens up questions about the agency of data within complex ecologies of relation, leading to the formation of the “data event” as a concept that refuses to separate the datum from the event of encounter. This has significant implications for how data are engaged through immersive cartography, and includes a series of abductive and diagrammatic techniques for working with data events in the final sections.
