ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the concepts transgression and transgressive and grounds them in how the term has been explored in discourses such as sociology and art. With a focus on transgressions from a ludic perspective, the chapter looks at phenomena such as cheating and looks at this ludic breaking of norms and taboos related to other forms of social transgressions. The chapter treats transgression as something dynamic and contextually dependent, which change over time between cultures and individuals. Central in the chapter is a discussion of public game controversies, focusing on what kind of content that has been looked upon as norm-breaking and why. The chapter concludes by pointing to future chapters while stressing that games indeed play well with transgression.
