ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an analysis of the media coverage of Latinx voters following the 2018 midterm elections. Latinx voters were framed as a key constituency for Democrats to win the House of Representatives in the lead up to the election. Media coverage from newspapers, online news, and cable news was qualitatively analyzed according to the themes of denationalization, racialization, and homogenization theorized in this book. The media tended to minimize the differences between Latinx voters, especially by focusing on immigration as a Latinx issue. Latinx voters were also racialized a voting constituency similar to white and black voters. They were cast as a key part of the Democratic base. Denationalization was not as common, suggesting that the media still prefers to cast Latinx voters as foreign to the nation.
