ABSTRACT

The best organizations, and even the best departments within organizations, have a roadmap: a clear vision of where they would like to be and the means by which they will get there. The three concepts of vision, benefits, and objectives can be thought of as having a cascading relationship. The vision represents the over-arching context for the project—be that personal, departmental, organizational, local, national, or even global. The benefits are what the Sponsor of the project wants to achieve as a result of the work. Typically, the benefits will accrue to the Sponsor—that is to say, it is the Sponsor who will actually receive the benefits once the project is complete. The objectives describe what will be done in order to achieve the benefits. They describe what it is that the project will do. Projects are delivery vehicles and as such should focus on delivery.
