ABSTRACT
Delivering any kind of education, to any group of people, demands that the educators should be clear about what it is that they are trying to achieve. Institutions that provide early parenting education, whether they be health or social welfare organisations, businesses or charities, must know what their aims are for the educational interventions to which they commit staff, time and resources. The ‘decade of the brain’ in the 1990s threw new light on brain development in unborn and newborn babies, and further stimulated interest in the potential of transition to parenthood education. In considering the impact of education on parenting skills, the review looked solely at education provided in pregnancy; its remit was not to look at education provided both prenatally and postnatally, or just postnatally. Early parenting education aims to help mothers and fathers establish an enduring emotional relationship with their child, based on frequent, reciprocal, sensitive and enjoyable interactions.
