ABSTRACT

It didn’t take me long to get Shobhavati to talk. Clearly she is relatively new to the institution and hasn’t become, what we in our jargon call ‘institutionalised’. She had been a pre-trial prisoner in another prison for about nine months before being brought to this one after being convicted of killing her husband. ‘Dhara 302’ is what she answers when I ask her what she is here for (Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code).
