ABSTRACT

Three research methodlogies were adopted - content analysis, interview schedules and questionnaires - and later subjected to the Statistical Package for Social Science for analyzing and tabulating the quantitative aspects of the data so collected. Content analysis was the natural choice for evaluating the proportion and prioritization of programmes on contemporary television, especially news in India. A content analysis of a large sample of the same was undertaken. Moreover, an extensive qualitative content analysis of selected programmes was also undertaken in order to probe into the nature of television texts, more specifically the 'news text' for its trend analysis and to study the newsworthiness of different news stories and the amount of development reportage on television news. These time bands have the most important stories usually the debates of the day are discussed by senior anchors, including managing editors of channels.
