ABSTRACT

There is a long history of positing humans as selfish, aggressive, insecure and riven with desire of one kind or another. The logic of the market dominates in government, industry and mass media. Such debate as exists has more to do with details of whether and how much to regulate markets; there is near unanimity regarding the model of development it proposes and the conception of humans and of society on which it depends. This chapter contemplates the way in which the logic of the market disarticulates the relationships between cause and effect and how this, in turn, facilitates the normalisation, even justification, of adharma whether in the socioeconomic sphere or in the realm of individual conduct. A generalised culture of disregard for consequences assists in creating a sense of moral impunity. The fascination for the trials and tribulations of individuals extends beyond celebrities to include unknown participants in reality television as also in music and other televised competitions.
