ABSTRACT

I completed a major in psychology in Wellington, with a BA on top of the MSc. I describe some of the history of psychology in New Zealand, which actually goes back almost to the 19th-century origins of scientific psychology in Germany, although not established as such until 1948. I switched to Auckland where a new Department of Psychology had been established, gaining an MA in psychology in 1961. The new professor there was a Canadian, with a PhD from McGill University in Montreal, which prompted me to apply for a Commonwealth Scholarship to Canada. I was awarded the scholarship, was married, and we set off for Montreal.
