ABSTRACT
So to Montreal, with both culture shock and climate shock. I absorbed something of the culture of a prominent department of psychology, much influenced by the legendary Donald O. Hebb, who introduced the study of the brain to psychology. For my PhD I studied aspects of short-term memory, under the benevolent supervision of Dalbir Bindra, a distinguished and eclectic researcher, who grew up in what is now Pakistan but gained his PhD at Harvard. I stayed an extra year at McGill as a postdoc, but was obliged to return to New Zealand under the terms of the scholarship. I was appointed Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Auckland in 1966.
