ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces strategies students and educators can use to verify items that appear in social media feeds and other media to ensure they are not passing along misinformation/disinformation. It provides a set of questions for reflection and a list of suggested resources. People are subjected to a barrage of information every day. There is a lack of consistency in quality control associated with this information. Persons responsible for originally posting this information should be held accountable for its reliability, but that does not always happen. Therefore, it is increasingly important that media consumers take time to vet the truth of the items they read, watch, or listen to prior to passing them along to others. The chapter focuses on basic fact-checking strategies that educators and students can use whenever they are thinking about liking or reposting information they encounter online. In addition to those general tips, there are some activities to practice and expand fact-checking skills.
