ABSTRACT

This chapter draws on suggestions for ways in which education and associated professionals can promote and facilitate parental involvement to develop, support and enable their son’s or daughter’s decision-making ability. SEND COP 1.40 states that ‘all professionals working with families should look to enable children and young people to make choices for themselves from an early age’. The efficacy of children helping other children within an educational context is evidenced in the wealth of research, both with same-age and cross-age peers – the latter is likely to be of more relevance as generally there is an age difference between siblings. Education professionals will need to have acquired knowledge and experience of approaches to develop and support children’s and young people’s decision making, likewise having an overall strategy for encouraging parental involvement in this endeavour.
