ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the evidence from research, legislation, policy, national and international, and case law, to support the contention that developing decision-making should be part of an education and associated professional’s everyday practice. Children’s and young people’s mental health has recently become a focus for the government and is seen as a significant social challenge, leading to the publication of a Green Paper in December 2017 to consult on transforming children and young people’s mental health provision in England. The exploration begins with establishing a definition of mental health in terms that are understood by education and associated professionals. The government proposed a range of delivery models for the teams, including those led by a group of schools, others by voluntary or community sector organisations or further education colleges, with the expectation that schools, colleges and other local partners will have a central role in designing and leading delivery.
