ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 focuses on language policies and language planning, mainly at the level of the state or nation, though with some consideration of family language policy. The differences between a national and an official language are discussed and the importance of the attitudes and behavior of individuals is recognised in determining the success or failure of language planning activities. Linguistic landscapes are discussed in this context and the ways in which status or prestige planning, corpus planning and acquisition planning are designed to address societal challenges are described. The process of codification is also described and illustrated in this chapter. Finally, a range of methods are described for collecting and analysing data which can inform language policy and assist language planning efforts.
