ABSTRACT

The more extreme advocates of the position seem uneasy with the idea that gendered critiques and ensuing cultural changes will result in a loss of some of the most beneficial aspects of the traditional masculine role: task completion, independence, risk taking, providing for one’s family, loyalty, and courage, among others. An abstraction is an idea that lacks a concrete and tangible nature; it stands apart from specific instances in the real world but can be applied to them. Some examples are love, honesty, freedom, generosity, charity, determination, and trust. Loyalty entails feelings of support and commitment to another person or group. It tends to be a strong value in men’s groups such as fraternities and athletic teams. But what often passes for loyalty is actually conformity. Take the instance where a friend, teammate, or fraternity brother is behaving self-destructively. Others may think that they are being loyal by not challenging him failing to do so can lead to bad situations.
