ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of meta-analyses and literature reviews on the benefits that assistive technology may provide for autistics. ‘Assistive technology’ is a broad term and in the context of this chapter it applies to portable devices that are used to enhance academic performance, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices, robots, and video-modelling. Once this literature has been reviewed, a rating of each technological approach in assisting autistics and an explanation of where research could be conducted in the future are presented. Throughout this chapter the views and experiences from autistics about the potential benefits and suitability of different assistive technology devices and strategies are also presented.
