ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the literature on typical sensory-based strategies that can be used to support autistics. It begins with an examination of the literature about the possible benefits that weighted clothes and blankets might give autistics. It then rates the efficacy of these sensory-based strategies as well as presenting several directions for research in the future. Afterwards, this chapter presents insights and experiences from a group of autistics about weighted blankets and weighted clothes. It then examines the literature about the therapeutic benefits that aromatherapy massage, acupuncture, holding therapy, and Sensory Integration Therapy (SIT) for autistics. It then concludes with a series of views from autistic adults about sensory-based strategies.
