ABSTRACT
This introduction chapter introduces the topic of the volume and some of the primary themes related to my use of the theories of psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan and philosopher Michel Foucault to understand subjectivity in early modern English utopian literature. I argue that early modern utopian texts depict both Lacanian and Foucauldian subjectivity to create what I call the malleable subject. It includes brief summaries of the chapters and the ten literary texts I examine, which serve as case studies in my analysis of how the writings of Lacan and Foucault intersect.
