ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the chronology of events in Medieval Britain during the period 1399-1485. On the 6th October 1399, Henry’s new Parliament meets; Archbishop Arundel delivers a sermon as chancellor and the MPs elect a Speaker. On 29th October, the trial of the ‘Counter-Appellants’ takes place for the illegal 1397 prosecutions, killing Gloucester and confiscating Henry’s inheritance illegally; they plead coercion by Richard and his ally William Scrope, Earl of Wiltshire. On 3 November they are found guilty. On 4th January 1400, as the conspirators assemble at Kingston-upon-Thames, the king is tipped off at the last minute about the Windsor murder plot and flees to London in time with his sons. The rebels enter Windsor in a hurry hours after Henry has left to find no king, proclaim Richard restored and proceed to Richard’s wife Isabella’s residence nearby at Sonning to secure her support.
