ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 is a discussion of research and recommendations for overcoming UAch and disadvantage by schools showing the underlying themes and results. Early years gaps, the reasons for them and remedial strategies are discussed. The reasons and concerns about boys’ and girls’ underachievement are addressed, and two example case studies are detailed, showing the needs and how teachers might have intervened. Five audit steps are discussed, showing how the school provision can be assessed for basic skills needs, teaching, motivation and communication, behaviour management, and ways in which the audit results may be used to improve performance and the support of typical underachievers and all learners in a gender-equal context. It concludes with ways of auditing and reframing teaching and learning to personalise learning development and foster social constructivism and constructivist teachers.
