ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 addresses the profiles and needs of three underachieving boys as they enter secondary schools and compares their capabilities and needs with cohorts of other pupils. The profiles show the main problem area was difficulty with writing skills, in particular spelling and handwriting. The second section details the profiles of five referred underachieving girls from Years 2 to 8. They were all found to have writing difficulties of some kind, and the interventions they needed are detailed. The final section analyses the mock examination answers of two referred BAME girls in Year 11 to help the teacher and head understand why they have not performed as well as expected.
