ABSTRACT

Chapter 12 looks at the law and the role it has in limiting and/or promoting gender equality. It highlights the history of the law’s treatment of women, offering an overview of Titles VII and IX, and explores if biased attitudes of the past still exist.

In addition, consideration is given to the effectiveness that equal protection and opportunity laws play in changing policies that once discriminated against women. The chapter also provides a wide-ranging exploration of how the law addresses sexual harassment, rape, and violence against women, together with how gender influences the legal system when it comes to divorce and parental rights.
