ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 explores the nature of sex differences in friendship, overviewing friendship models and discussing aspects of same-sex and cross-sex friendships. The chapter explains how males and females view intimacy, self-disclosure/expressiveness, verbal interaction, and friendship activities, and indicates how stereotypes influence views of friendship including how roles and social opportunities influence the nature of friendships.

Suggesting that we continually need to reexamine our beliefs about the friendships of men and women, the chapter also notes that the future is likely to present us with a plethora of healthy variations on the theme of friendship.
