ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 explores the idealogues of leadership for development and how this intersects with development leadership as a situated practice. Leadership underpins the construct of development, inferred in the very idea of development as leading the way towards societal transformation and challenging the status quo: purposive action by reflexive actors. Contributions of leaders, political and social actors working individually or collectively have also shaped much of the impressions of development thinking and practice. With some notable exceptions, however, leadership theorising is relatively absent in development scholarship. Few studies go beyond the idealogue of desirable leadership, ‘fit for purpose’ for development to address the challenges and crises experienced in the world.
