ABSTRACT

Broadcast writing is different than traditional print or online because there's an announcer reading it out loud, and the audience only gets one chance to hear the material. Although newsroom computer systems frequently determine style, there are generally accepted universals in writing broadcast copy. This chapter introduces students to the idea of writing for the ear and how and why that’s different from all of the writing that the student has probably done up to that point. There are specific instructions on how to handle the use of numbers, symbols, names, emphasis, pronunciation, etc.
