ABSTRACT

The staffs of the upper school were aware of the importance of the transition in the pupils' careers, and they were aware of at least some of the anxieties that it generated for the pupils. The programme aimed to increase the desirability of the passage for the pupils, and to provide accurate first-hand information about the new school, to substitute for some of the rumour and myth. The high point of the evening, however, was the modelling of school uniform by first year pupils, which created a great deal of interest among parents and pupils. A taste of that experience came with the whole day preview of the upper school that the middle school pupils were given. The middle school pupils expected a stricter regime at the secondary school than they had experienced at middle school, and many of them had expressed a good deal of fear about very strict teachers who were free to use the cane.
