ABSTRACT

Because of its abstract and complex character, measuring meaning in life is not an easy undertaking. But the same is true for many psychological characteristics. Psychology’s psychometric inventory comprises a multitude of methods that give us access to subjective lifeworlds. They include explorative methods related to individual cases and the quantitative operationalisation of latent constructs. Qualitative methods and quantitative methods are both helpful in assessing meaning in life. This chapter presents both the methodology and the results of a qualitative approach (interview with laddering technique) and a quantitative approach (Sources of Meaning and Meaning in Life Questionnaire, SoMe), and it introduces an instrument at the interface between the two – the SoMe-Card Method.
