ABSTRACT
Severe injuries or death can result, so safety concerns go beyond mere inconvenience and questions about restitution. The chapter focuses on how products are used after purchase, how they perform, and how they are disposed of. Economic security is the condition of having a stable income or other resources to retain a level of living that is sustainable. Underutilization is a condition where consumers use a product, but only to a small fraction of the extent to which they intended to use it. Anger, embarrassment, and guilt may be associated with underutilization, or the buyer may simply have lost interest in the product or service. Underutilization also points to the fact that consumer behavior is imprecise—mistakes occur. In order to save money and heartache, consumers need to try to lessen nonuse, perhaps by knowing themselves better and by spending more time on the decision end of the consumption process.
