ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the euthanasia of wild animals performed by zoo veterinarians in zoos and aquariums as well as in rescue centers and in situ settings. Ecologist Marc Bekoff, an outspoken critic of this practice, has dubbed it "zoothanasia". Euthanasia is not very popular in Iran-neither for humans nor for pets, and not even for wild or zoo animals. There is a lot of hypocrisy in this context, Avni-Magen concluded. The chapter shows that, although they still work mainly within the zoo walls, zoo veterinarians are increasingly expanding their care also to wild animals outside of the zoo. It explores acts of killing animals by veterinarians for population management purposes. the chapter turns its attention to fish to discuss how euthanasia is practiced and secured through the standardization and the regulation of the fine details of veterinary operations.
